A femtosecond laser works with extremely short pulses that can create a cut inside the cornea without breaking its surface. Rather than vaporising tissue, it separates it.
It is used to create the flap in Femto-LASIK, to separate the lenticule in SMILE, and for certain steps of cataract surgery.
