Cataract

A cataract is the gradual clouding of the crystalline lens. Vision becomes hazy, colours fade, glare from oncoming headlights increases and the refractive error shifts.

It is an age-related change, though injury, certain medicines or diabetes can accelerate it. No eye drops can reverse it.

The only remedy is surgery, in which the clouded lens is removed and replaced with an artificial intraocular lens. It is among the most frequently performed operations of any kind.
