Floaters

Floaters are shadowy shapes drifting across the visual field, produced by clumps within the vitreous. They are most noticeable against a bright, plain background such as the sky or a white wall.

They are usually a harmless age-related change. A sudden increase in floaters together with flashes of light or a curtain in the visual field can signal retinal detachment and is a reason for prompt examination.
