Phacoemulsification

Phacoemulsification is the standard method of cataract surgery. A probe is introduced through a very small incision, ultrasound breaks up the clouded lens, and the fragments are aspirated.

An artificial intraocular lens is then placed into the empty capsule left behind. The incision is usually small enough not to need stitches.
