Intraocular lens
Also known as: IOL
An intraocular lens is the artificial lens that replaces the clouded natural lens during cataract surgery. It is inserted folded through a small incision and unfolds inside the eye.
It stays in the eye permanently and needs no maintenance or replacement. Its power is calculated by biometry before surgery.
The type of lens determines the distances the eye will be focused for afterwards. The choice is always a trade-off and is made together with the doctor, based on how the patient uses their eyes.
