Intraocular pressure is the pressure of the fluid inside the eye that maintains its shape. It results from the balance between the production and the drainage of aqueous humour.
Measuring it is a routine part of an examination, because pressure that stays high damages the optic nerve and is the main risk factor for glaucoma.
