Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a group of conditions in which the optic nerve is damaged, most often in connection with raised intraocular pressure. The visual field narrows from the edges inwards.

What makes it treacherous is that it does not hurt for a long time and central vision stays good, so the loss goes unnoticed. Yet the damage to nerve fibres is permanent.

Treatment aims to halt further damage, usually by lowering intraocular pressure with drops, laser or surgery. This is why monitoring and early detection matter.
