Optic nerve

The optic nerve carries signals from the retina to the brain. It is a bundle of roughly a million nerve fibres leaving the back of the eye.

Its appearance during a fundus examination says a great deal about the health of the eye. Changes to the optic nerve are central to monitoring glaucoma, which damages those fibres over time.
