DMEK

DMEK is the thinnest of the lamellar transplants. It transfers Descemet’s membrane with the endothelium alone, without any supporting tissue.

Because only what is genuinely diseased gets replaced, vision tends to return faster and the risk of graft rejection is lower than with DSEK. Handling such a thin graft is, however, more demanding.

The graft is unfolded in the anterior chamber and pressed against the cornea with an air or gas bubble. The patient therefore lies face up for a period after the procedure.
