Tear film

The tear film is the thin layer of fluid covering the surface of the eye. It smooths out minor irregularities of the cornea, nourishes it and protects it from infection.

When it breaks down you get burning, stinging or blurred vision that clears briefly after a blink. This is the central mechanism of dry eye syndrome.
