Diabetic retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy is damage to the blood vessels of the retina caused by diabetes. Vessels leak, become blocked, and new fragile ones grow that can bleed.

It runs without symptoms for a long time, which is why people with diabetes are advised to have a regular fundus examination even when their vision gives them no trouble.
