Corneal endothelium

The endothelium is the single layer of cells on the inner surface of the cornea that continuously pumps water out of it and keeps it clear. Without that pump the cornea would swell and cloud over.

These cells are not replaced during life, their number only falls. When too many are lost the cornea loses clarity, and the remedy is a transplant that replaces precisely this layer.
